Anne's House of Dreams
by L.M. Montgomery
I only have one thing to say: why make this novel, if in the end, Anne is pressured to sacrifice her house of dreams because of baby Jem, and not just her house of dreams but mostly everything!
It's kind of ironic when you think about it, because her dreams are immediately overstamped when she produces a child, actually ever since she MARRIED, leaving all the things we loved about Anne behind. -- her imagination (which becomes less & less), ambitions, old friends -- with Marilla being the only character who returns briefly, not even Diana visits. All connection is cut! As though her old life didn't matter, when it's the very thing that shaped her and her future!
The entire point of this novel should have been focused on Anne and Gilbert, but mostly Anne. Seeing as how Gilbert was away on constant errand, due to his new medical profession. It should have been about Anne achieving her dreams, ambitions and going on the greatest adventure of all! Because that's what Anne's character has been built to reflect: a character who never stops exploring or discovering or loving.
I don't know if it was the storyline or LM's writing that has changed but whichever it was, the series have evolved to be less Anne, more generic, and more how do I say, stripped down, generalised?
The ending was perhaps the greatest defeat to me. I just wish Anne's character didn't revolve around the lives of the other characters. Because that's what this novel was ultimately about. I could add more but...
