The Chain by Adrian McKinty
5.0

This was one of my most anticipated books of 2019 so when I saw the audiobook available in my library I jumped at the chance to read it. After reading the blurb I had major ties to the film 'The Box' where a couple is given a box and they can decide whether or not to push a button but if they do someone somewhere will die - although not exactly the same plot it sounds very familiar so I was very excited to see what this book would bring.

In this book we follow Rachel and her daughter Kylie - one day when Kylie is waiting for the bus to school she gets kidnapped and Rachel gets a phone call that will change her life forever - someone has her daughter and they'll kill her if they don't do exactly what they say. Rachel has to kidnap another child within 24 hours and transfer a cash ransom to an anonymous bank account - can Rachel become a kidnapper?

Ohh this book was good! It makes you realise the lengths that you would go to in order to save your child, one day you wouldn't dream of kidnapping a child and threatening to kill them, but to save your daughter...you'd do anything. That is how The Chain works, everyone works together, no police, no trying to break it, do everything they ask and you get to live with your child, if not then your child dies and they move on to someone else.

The first half of this book was absolutely amazing, I could not put it down because everything was so fast paced and told in such a frenzy that I had to stick with Rachel to see what would happen. You're right there with her - the stress at being given the shocking news, the anger that someone could do this to you...but then the resignation that you have to do this to save your child. It's tough but you can see things through the character's eyes and what initially seems like an impossible task you find yourself thinking that yeah you would probably kidnap someone else's child to save your own. It's a twisted way of thinking but McKinty plays it so well that you don't see it that way at all.

If the book would have stopped at the half way mark it 100% would have been my favourite book of the year hands down. However...it didn't. Although it didn't massively drop it certainly didn't live up to the hype of the first half. Things slowed down, they became a bit more tedious and I found that I was starting to not care. Like why would you go to those lengths? Just leave it alone!

The minor 'plot twist' (if you can call it that) I did see coming so there was a point where I was waiting for Rachel to catch on which slowed the story for me but it did pick back up after that and it didn't really ruin the story for me, just slowed it down.

I would definitely recommend this book, its extremely fast paced, you're right there with all the characters and you really feel for the mother and her daughter (no I don't have kids, I can just imagine how hard it must be knowing your daughter had been kidnapped). Go pick this book up now if you like being sucked in to a story, not knowing which way its going to go and being on the edge of your seat throughout!
