Abandoned by their alcoholic mother, Hank Hooperman (almost 13) and little sister Boo (almost 3) have no choice but to ask a stranger for help, and fear separation by the childcare system.
This is a sweet but predictable story with dry writing. The dryness could kindly be attributed to trauma on the perspective character's part, but it was still distracting and so failed to establish emotional connection with me as a reader.
"Lasagna Means I Love You" is similar in its sweetness and predictability, but has a stronger emotional element.
