This book was straight-up disgusting. I love a book that has a completely irredeemable main character, like in early Otessa Mosfegh’s works. The governess here was more ill than evil or lazy, which doesn’t make it as much fun. However, the book was also clever in weaving in how gross life actually WAS during the Victorian era, so I appreciated the delightfully appalling history lesson along the way.
