Firekeeper's Daughter by Angeline Boulley
3.0
This book was just ok for me. I wanted to like it but I found myself just being bored with it in the second half. It takes place in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan, in the UP. It’s a sort of hockey-infused, Native American mixer/drug mystery of sorts. “The bluff showcases a gorgeous panoramic view of the St. Marys River, the International Bridge into Canada, and the city of Sault Sainte Marie, Ontario.” “don’t be like tourists and pronounce it like Salt. It’s Soo.” ““Over there, a few miles away, is Lake Superior.” I point to the west before following the river. “It feeds the St. Marys River, which is the international border with Canada. The city on the other side is also called Sault Sainte Marie, but it’s a lot bigger than our town.”
I did highlight a few things:
“In Ojibwe culture, the owl is a companion for crossing over when you die,”
The Seven Grandfathers are teachings about living the Anishinaabe minobimaadiziwin—our good way of life—through love, humility, respect, honesty, bravery, wisdom, and truth.
A blanket party is when a guy does something bad to a woman and her female cousins take him into the woods, rolled in a blanket, and beat the moowin out of him.
“Eta Carinae?” Jamie asks. “The largest star in the galaxy,”
Her regalia includes a dress, belt, moccasins, and a lot of other items. Dancers don’t start out with their full regalia; they get it bit by bit. Each piece is a connection to her family, her teachers, and even to ancestors generations back. If you know the story of her regalia—who and where and why each item came to be—then you know her.”
“Good. Because things end how they start,”
He looks really rough. And you know what that coffee filter stuffed into his pop was laced with. He can’t even get through a day without it. He’s in deep.”
Custer Died for Your Sins by Vine Deloria Jr. “Auntie got me that book when I was fourteen. That was the year we made my Jingle Dress skirt. Each day, she had me sew one jingle cone on my skirt. Three hundred sixty-five days, three hundred sixty-five teachings.”
Firekeepers strike the fire for ceremonies, funerals, sweat lodges, and other cultural events where our prayers are carried by the smoke to Creator. A ceremonial fire is special; you don’t roast marshmallows or sing forty-niner songs at it. Firekeepers ensure that protocols are followed the entire time it burns: no politics, no drinking, and no gossip. Only good thoughts to feed the fire and carry our prayers.
I choke up at the sound of Lily’s new name, indicating she is now in a different time and place. We traditionally add “-iban” after someone has changed worlds.
to act without harm is to know respect.
“Meth was once a legal, medicinal product. In the 1930s, you could buy amphetamine inhalers to treat asthma. People liked the side effects—bursts of energy and euphoria—so pharmaceutical companies developed a pill version.”
“During World War Two, troops were given meth pills to make them better soldiers: able to stay awake for long periods, with hyperalert senses and an increased willingness to take risks.”
“The negative side effects also became known: paranoia, hallucinations, delusions, and heart irregularities, including heart failure.”
should ask Auntie the word in Anishinaabemowin for the beams of light you can see when the sun hides behind clouds. In science, they’re called crepuscular rays.
John Herrington, who is a member of the Chickasaw Nation and was the first Native American to walk in space.” I keep babbling, “Did you know that John Herrington brought an eagle feather to the International Space Station?”
When you love someone, but don’t like parts of them, it complicates your memories of them when they’re gone.
a girl needs at least one grown man in her life who sees her worth as inherent. Values her just as she is, not dependent upon her appearance or accomplishments.
phagocytosis,
“I thought you were a good girl,” he says conspiratorially. “But you’re a bad girl who doesn’t follow rules.” “I didn’t realize it was an either-or situation.”
Clear eyes and open hearts, as Auntie says when she means drug- and alcohol-free.
my mom and my nokomis always left gifts for the Little People. I’ve always heard about the Little People, but I’ve never paid much attention to the stories.
Uncle David asked me what the difference was between cleverness and intelligence. I’d figured out that a person could be intelligent without being clever, but not clever without also being intelligent. Cleverness also required a measure of shrewdness and creativity, neither of which were necessary to be intelligent.
It turns out that lies, in whatever form, are exhausting.
ethnobotany program. That’s the study of how people all over the world use plants as medicines.
