4.0

So this is an odd one to rate, because on the one hand, the plot and writing are three stars from me, tops (serviceable prose, ok cast of characters, and fine, some of the alien stuff went over my head). But the popcorn entertainment vibe where you can't put the book down, it's 4AM, and you've lost all sense of time but are somehow sensing a vibe between the lead human and her alien co-protagonist? ... Yeah, sure, I'll give that four stars.

Plot-wise, this is a First Contact story set in the mid-to-late 2000s. It's got everything: conspiracy theories, absent parents, burnout in your 20s because you have no coping mechanisms, and (of course) aliens from outer space. Am I forgetting the human-alien romance vibe? No, I'm just actively avoiding it. (Look, sorry, it's not my thing, I know some people love it, I'm just here for the panic attacks in the supply closet and references to Fergalicious.)

Recommended if you like adventure, sci-fi, and that page-turner feeling when you know you shouldn't stay up to read the next chapter.
