Fantastic Mr Fox by Roald Dahl

3.0

Goodness!

There are no words for this book that I can truly offer of my own. I enjoyed the ending and I enjoyed the plight of the farmers; however the journey of the wildlife was something else altogether... So here I shall tell you the tale in direct excerpts from the book, and I hope you'll understand why I would never recommend this to children.

Spoiler
'Boggis had three boiled chickens smothered in dumplings, Bunce had six doughnuts filled with disgusting goose-liver paste, and Bean had two gallons of cider. All three of them kept their guns beside them.'

'Down in the tunnel the foxes were slowly but surely starving to death.'

"I'd sooner you stay down here and die in peace." (Mrs Fox to her children)

"Doesn't this worry you just a tiny bit, Foxy?" - Badger
"Worry me? What?" - Mr Fox
"All this...this stealing."

'The smallest fox had sneaked a jar off the shelf and had taken a gulp.'
'You must understand this was not the ordinary weak fizzy cider one buys in a store. It was the real stuff, a home-brewed fiery liquor that burned in your throat and boiled in your stomach.'
"Ah-h-h-h-h-h!' gasped the Smallest Fox. "That's some cider!"
