Darconville's Cat by Alexander Theroux
5.0

This is the kind of book which, when you reach the end, leaves something like a void inside you, and it makes it really difficult to pick another book which will enrapture you in the same way.

Astonishing is an apt description for this book. There are so many sections where you are truly astonished at the author's astounding ability to use the perfect language, to invent words using the Germanic style of merging words together, and vividly describe events, people, feelings, cities and towns, or even parts of the human body! When Alexander Theroux takes a dislike to someone or something, he truly shows why a pen is mightier than a sword. He slashes at the object of his dislike with his pen, leaving it in shreds and unrecognizable. This is the first novel which has made me really appreciate the 'pen is mightier than the sword' idiom which we have been told from childhood.

Yes, there were some sections which were close to unreadable, due to the vitriol that some of the characters are capable of spouting. You start wondering, does the author really believe this? Is this character a stand-in for the author? How can I like an author who is ready to express such hatred? But Theroux shows by the end where he stands.

This is a highly recommended book. Brilliant from page 1 to the end.
