A Simple Favor by Darcey Bell

I’ll grant the book two stars because I was interested enough in it to finish. Unfortunately, the ending was disappointing, which capped off an all-around disappointing read. The characters felt wooden, like they fell out of an alien college course on ‘how to write human characters.’ I didn’t even connect with them enough to hate them; I just kept thinking: ‘that is not how a human person would react in that situation.’ There were also a lot of plot dead ends, little teasers of potentially interesting sub-plots that promptly withered away into nothing. I think Stephanie could have been written out without hurting the story much, which is a pretty awful trait for a main character to have. In addition, she is so naive and gullible as to defy belief. The plot twists were pretty ‘meh.’ I’m bummed for the author because the book’s premise was so interesting, but unfortunately the execution and the plot twists both fell flat. Better luck next time.
