Reading this after HHGTTG, it is clearly written as a complete piece. The hilarity is there - oh, the hilarity, but the complexity and kinda beauty of the plot is in the weaving towards a great final scene. Dirk's obnoxiousness is wonderfully rendered, and is allowed to stay consistent over the course of the book. All great stuff.
