I had been aware of the Amanda Know drama in a bare-bones way, so I didn't read this book trying to map the facts against the story, approaching it without acknowledging the "ripped from the headlines" element. Dubois deftly wove a story n which "facts" can be interpreted in more than one way. She acknowledges that the way we interpret these facts is informed by our own prejudices and worldview, that it is nearly impossible to separate the two. Lily's personality, the way she carried herself through life would be viewed in a number of different ways, through the prisms of parenthood, a sibling relationship, view of a lover, strangers, the media, and a prosecutor dealing with his own "version" of Lily. Dubois told a compelling story, removing the sensationalism that accompanied the Knox saga, so that a reader could take a closer look.
