'We don't want a subtle one,' said Socks. 'We want one with a good loud ring.'

Well if it isn't the jolly limit. Christie has pulled off an ingenious, yet subtle, sleight of hand and once again I look like a silly ass as my suspicions were all bosh and I was on the wrong track as to the identity of the dastardly murderer.

It's enough to make one not want to get out of bed at any unearthly hour before midday.  And that's how it all starts with one of the young men from the foreign office, a bunch of blethering idiots, a Mr Gerry Wade who is a champion sleeper and puts his hosts at Chimneys to a lot of bother as the rest of the guests are breakfasted and ready for lunch before he makes an appearance.

The guests enthusiastically set up a practical joke by setting up eight alarm clocks in his room after he's fallen asleep. A jolly jape that backfires when they find the alarms haven't woken him up because he's dead.
The damn impertinence of the young man to go dying like that and cause an inquest.

Lady Eileen Brent, known to all as Bundle, turns amateur detective and leading his own investigation is Superintendent Battle in this humorous thriller where Christie brings a Wodehouse feel with the butlers that are sensible and know everything, the upper class that are clueless and play golf badly or get in trouble with their gardeners, and the middle class who have far too much time on their hands. Christie also plays the thriller writers at their own game with a secret society, mysterious foreigners, a valuable formula, pistols and revolvers in gentlemen's pockets, and a feisty heroine in Bundle.

Absolutely spiffing fun with a tightly woven murder plot running throughout.
