A Rogue by Any Other Name
by Sarah MacLean
Okay. So. I know. If I don't like jerks for heroes, then I probably shouldn't be reading series about scoundrels, right? But you can be a scoundrel without being a butt. And he is very much a butt at certain times. Compromising a girl so you can get the property you want? Butt. Ignoring her? Butt. Treating her as a means to an end? Butt. Kant would not approve.
Luckily for him, his buttheadedness moderates at the end because of wuv. Twuu wuv. Also, apparently, a bit of twuu vagina. And apparently twuu wuv can make a man give up the quest for revenge that has sustained him for the last nine years. The last nine years where he ignored the heroine who was his best friend growing up. So, yeah, butt, but now maybe you should realize how stupid it was to throw her away for nine years, you ginormous doofus. And he's a really nice guy except for the nine years of ignoring her, and now that they're forced back together, she cures him of the butt in just a few weeks and a little bit of slap and tickle.
I actually really like the heroine. I liked her standing up for herself and demanding respect. And I like the hero (minus the buttparts... I don't know, I probably would have liked his butt, but not his buttness) most of the time. I just thought the timeline was unrealistically compressed.
And I wish she would have made him beg. At least once. Because he needed to go down on his knees and beg for forgiveness for some of that crap he put her through.
Oh well.
The prose was nice, and I enjoyed the story overall, and I'll keep reading the series, because the next story is her bespectacled botanist sister's story, and I have high hopes.
