The Vanishing Stair by Maureen Johnson

3.5 stars.

I actually like this one more than the first one, but if that's the case maybe I should bring down my rating of the first one... oh well.

I enjoyed the plot more in this one because there was no long-ass character building. And by that I mean no "nothing happens until halfway through the book". It jumps right back in from where we left off in "Truly Devious". Well, not right back in (there's a bit of stuff that happened in between but we find out about all of this really early into the book), but the plot picks up quickly. However, like the last book, I found myself bored during the book. Maybe it's a bit too slow paced for me.

The character building is heavily focused on Stevie and don't get me wrong, I like her and her narration a lot, but because of this I find that other characters are left out. I didn't see any major character development from any other characters and, to be honest, I find most of the side characters to be boring.

I liked the direction that the mystery is going in. The introduction of the new students and that whole deal (no spoilers lol) was interesting and unexpected. The part that I didn't like was the big reveal at the end. I wouldn't say it was predictable but it wasn't a huge shocker and that ruined it a bit. The end of the book was great. It left on the perfect cliffhanger and I'm intrigued to see where it picks back up.

An okay second book but it still suffers from most of the critiques I had for the first one.
