I read this entire series a few times years ago - back when I was, you know, a child. I was definitely a little disappointed this time around because I remembered absolutely ADORING every aspect of the story during past reads, and coming at it as an older person who has been enjoying plenty of middle fiction this year… I had great expectations which were not really met. However, I still had a really enjoyable time and look forward to the overarching plot becoming more complex as I progress through the series. It’s quite humorous in an understated manner, with many little quips which one would not consider Comedy Gold but do give the conversations a natural and interesting flow, and I appreciate the use of clichés in an ironic way. The world-building is effective and done in an unusual way, with the naming of streets and locations as though Twinford is a well-known place.

ALSO: Lauren Child seems to be suffering from a severe Deficiency of Commas. It grated greatly against me at first, however once I started thinking of the book more as a script for a 70s TV show than a novel it was permissible.
