Beauty by Kerascoët, Hubert Boulard
5.0
I have to say that I am a fan of Hubert. His stories are so insightful, original and dare I say it, classic. And Beauty is probably his crowning achievement. The character development from beginning to end of every single character is carved to perfection. The story unravels naturally, following the logical path that these characters take without a deus ex machina anywhere; they have to suffer their choices and make their own happy endings.
Beauty is, at first, obsessed with being beautiful and she revels in the way that she quite literally drives men wild with desire. But of course she learns that beauty can be deadly in the wrong hands and that a simple life being ugly might be better after all. She goes through a great deal in the short 150 pages and effectively helps to change the world around her.
I loved this because you absolutely can hate beauty. She's frivolous and selfish and not very strong at all and she has to harrow her way through life and all of the experiences it offers like the rest of us. You might even not like her by the end of it, after she is considerably more wizened. I also loved this because of the supporting characters. They all go through their own trials and tribulations to try and live a happy life either with or without Beauty, both because and in spite of her. A brilliant read from start to finish. 5/5
