This series has been hyped for awhile and since I've been expanding my romantasy horizons, I decided to try it.

This is a classic case of the misunderstood villain hero kidnaps the princess heroine in revenge against the heroine's father. Livia and Erik (the "Ever King")'s families have a history that I feel was better explained in the author's prior series. I enjoyed the found family dynamics of the Ever crew and how close Livia's family was, but I truly was just underwhelmed with everything else. This book did a lot of telling and not enough showing when it came to Livia and Erik's connection. Some plot points felt muddy and not well fleshed out. Livia's character development was wonky in that she was one person at the beginning of the book and a totally different one towards the end, without a real showing of why she suddenly was fine with being with the Ever crew.

I've already started the second book because of the cliffhanger, but this one was definitely a meh intro to the author's writing.
