Trauma and Recovery: The Aftermath of Violence--From Domestic Abuse to Political Terror by Judith Lewis Herman

4.0

remembering and telling the truth about terrible events are prerequisites both for the restoration of the social order and for the healing of individual victims.

the feminism in this book was outdated, but that's to be expected, given that it was first published in 1992. the primary reason for my not giving this five stars was that herman seemed convinced (if her use of gendered nouns in generalizations is any indication) that men would always be the perpetrators, while women would always be the victims.

(i am thinking, here, of [b:In the Dream House|43317482|In the Dream House|Carmen Maria Machado|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1547869259l/43317482._SX50_.jpg|65787792] as a high-profile example of "lesbian" abuse.)
