A Court of Wings and Ruin by Sarah J. Maas

3.0

It was okay.

I don't even remember much of the book. Though I honestly think that the villain fell short, the build up to the final battle with the King was lacklustre. The chapters regarding the war, I had found boring and slow to get through.
I think Tamlin should have been the series' true Villain, unfortunately, in the end I found him to be the most misunderstood / mistreated. Like granted, he locked Feyre up in a room / house, but that wasn't much of a reason to hate the man. I found Tamlin's storyline just felt unfinished and not put together, left with too many untied knots - there was a lot of potential there.

I found Sarah J.Maas was unwilling to kill off characters. Feyre dying in the first book and then coming back alive, cool. I can believe it. But then when a few characters die and then are brought back to life... You lose me there. If you don't want a character to die, then don't write their deaths! You can write something about being close to death's door, but they lose something eg. an arm, a part of their soul ect. And you will still get that same emotional impact that you want. Just don't tug on the same emotional strings, you lose the importance, the danger, the stakes of that moment or situation.

Just every character had plot armour.

And when I realised this, the story wasn't enjoyable. I get the spicey scenes and see how people really enjoy these novels. But they aren't good stories.

Characters' personalities and behaviours change quiet often. Often I found there was a loss of continuity in the storyline. Rhys went from having purple eyes in most chapters to having blue, and then back to purple eyes. Feyre being young and inexperienced, but during the battle with Hybern becomes a collected leader?!

I lost interest in almost all the main female characters. Except for Elaine. She did nothing wrong. Everyone else...thinking about it get's my gears turning. I do not like or accepts Mor's reasons to why she cannot tell Azriel her feelings towards him. She confesses to Feyre and asks if she is a horrible person. Feyre says no. I wanted to throw that book, out the window into the burning fiery pits of hell. You got to be mad, to lead a guy on for 5 centuries!! This is how you make a reader lose respect a strong female character.

What I did enjoy those, was the pot shots between Tamlin, Feyre and Rhys at the meeting with the high lords. That was great. I read it 5 times. That I love to see. True emotions of petties. Chief's kiss.

Am I going to finish this series? Yes, because I am a completest. But I think at this point Cassian, Azriel and Tamlin, are the only characters who are keeping me around to finish what I started.

2.5 Stars.
