Foul Heart Huntsman by Chloe Gong

A stunning conclusion to the secret Shanghai series. The content of this book revolves around two plots - the sino-japanese war, and Rosalind trying to stop lady Hong -a scientist from changing the world as we see into something horrible from her invention of a vial that could mean more strength, conditioning, and the immortality of the soldiers.
As the author cites in the author's note, this book was about "the utopian moment of forgiveness, reconciliation, and hope rather than about social reform." Chloe Gong manages to do this very well. The intricacies of the characters and their relationships with each other was very well done. I loved the how every individual character had a huge role, a personality so particular, and relation with others so unique. I enjoyed how everyone of them, at the end of the day, were so much more than the factions they were divided into. That they worked so well together for the greater good. Every move in the book was very unpredictable and Chloe Gong did it so well. The writing was very well done. I cannot even begin to express what I felt regarding the way the men in this book express their love.
Silas saying "My Mission has never been more important than you are"
Oliver saying, "That's what it means to fight for something - to love something. If the country is good enough for me to die for, why wouldn't you be?"
Orion saying, "YOU are my side. It is not betrayal". Brb, sobbing in a corner.
Not to mention the backstory of Rosalind and Orion was the most bittersweet thing I have read in a while.
Although, the way Orion's story was handled was a bit disappointing. Everything with him and his relationship with Rosalind felt so rushed. So did the ending. Although every character got a perfect closure, I felt that orion could have had a better place and writing in the story. I could only wish to read more about these characters in future. I am going to miss them terribly.
