The Other Olympians: Fascism, Queerness, and the Making of Modern Sports by Michael Waters

5.0

Wow. A deeply fascinating read. It draws a red thread between anti-semitism, homophobia, transphobia, intersexism, the rise of the Nazi party, and how it’s all wrapped around the folks who just want to play sports. It opened my eyes to a lot of people I had no idea existed, and yet here they were, making headlines and winning medals in their lifetimes.

The pacing and prose of the book was well thought out, and I appreciate the author maintaining historical accuracy while keeping it engaging. It’s early in the year, but this might be one of my favorite reads of the year.
