This is such a hard book to rate as I was gripped pretty much from the start and raced to finish it. BUT it was so dark and I struggled through some of the sections as a result. It deals with terrible themes such as the buying and selling of women, forced sterilisation, rape and there’s an abundance of misogyny. These themes which ran throughout the book made it hard to stomach and I found many of the scenes extremely hard to read. But I gradually fell in love with the characters and am looking forward to seeing where this goes.
One very infuriating thing about this book was how long it took Briony to work out that Toven has feelings for her. Literally every single person on the planet could see it before she could, and just when I thought she’d finally accepted it, she convinced herself otherwise. Hoping Briony will get there a bit more quickly in the next book!!
