A Torch Against the Night by Sabaa Tahir

Thoughts:

Bleeding skies! Sabaa who gave you the right for the sequel to be this good?!

Off we go! A Torch Against the Night dives directly into the next scene following book one, and doesn’t stop. The pace isn’t too fast and the descriptions are not too much where you feel lost as we fly through. Tahir grips your hand and pulls you through the story along with Elias, Laia and Helene. I gasped, I screamed, I laughed and I suffered alongside them all.

Damn… I’m almost lost for words in how to describe what they went through -no, what WE (myself included lol) went through. To summarize in briefest way without giving anything away, Elias and Laia are trying to face or on the run from the empire, Helene, the Commandant, the Warden, traitors, monsters and death. They seek to find Darin, Laia’s brother, in Kauf, the place furthest from freedom and most difficult to get into and even worse out of. Helene is torn between her duty, her family and her mixed feelings for Elias. Most supporting characters are not who you think they are and will find ways of surprising you at each turn. Don’t trust your friends. Don’t trust your allies. Of course don’t trust your enemies or spies -but wait, maybe they could surprise you.

(Sidenote: Super intrigued by Harper and his character development. Helene, although very controversial, has been my favorite character. I believe this is because of her growth, her journey and the questionable journey to come. I’m thrilled to find out where we will go next.)

I started with the e-book and then switched to the audiobook for my commute in-between work. After hearing the narrators’ voices, I made the permanent switch to the audio. IT IS SO WELL DONE AND EXACTLY HOW IMAGINED IT IN MY HEAD. The only voice surprise was for Keenan, and I was thoroughly pleased.

This journey, although terrifying and heartbreaking, has been exceptional. I believed the first book to be very good, but the following book blew me away. I am attached and very excited for the third. Grateful that this series is already released, and I don’t have to wait.
