I'm also so skeptical of sequels because they tend to fall flat or lose the magic the first book in the series had. As I gave Legendborn five stars I was extra nervous for Bloodmarked and I adored the first book so much. Let me tell you, Bloodmarked did not disappoint. It felt like a natural progression further into the world, the characters had good continuing arcs and development, and there were new twists that kept me on the edge of my seat but didn't feel like they were out of left field just to shock me, they were lurking there the entire time and I just couldn't see them until the curtain was pulled back (which is my favorite kind of twist). There were two plot points that I wished we had lingered on and explored a bit longer to fully see their impact on the world, and there was one plot point I couldn't quite understand in line with the character who drove it forward, but none of these points were impactful detriments to the book for me, just headscratchers. Overall I really enjoyed it and cannot wait for the third book to come out!
