Life Ceremony: Stories by Sayaka Murata
4.0

individual rating + short review ! !

a first-rate material — very weird with a curious ending, didn't fully capture me, though ; 3.5*

a magnificent spread — overstays its welcome and over explains its themes ; 2*

a summer night's kiss — short and sweet ; 4*

two's family — same characters as before, with more development this time. really enjoyed its exploration of nonstereotypical families, and of death/mourning, as well as friendship ; 4*

the time of the large star — short and a little confusing, weird enough that i still liked it ; 3.5*

poochie — weird as FUCK, only a little gross idk what it is with you people lol ; 5*

life ceremony — interesting exploration of societal evolution, as well as what morals mean ; 4*

body magic — best exploration of self-love, makes masturbation out to be something pure and sweet, rather than shameful. -0.5* for brief cousin incest mention.. ; 4.5*

lover on the breeze — super weird, but also not what it claims to be in the blurb, so that was odd ; 3.5*

puzzle — now this is both weird and gross as fuck, really loved the main character's characterization ; 4*

eating the city — i understood that this was about how your environment changes you, how you need to be one with where you are to be full, and how sharing these experiences with someone is really the best ; 4.5*

hatchling — incredible, heartfelt story about changing yourself to the whims of others, of having no actual personality yourself because you're so dissociated from any actual sense of self ; 5*

— averages out to 3.9, which is an automatic 4
