What can I say except this truly deserves its fame. His horror is consistently great, always just hitting it's mark in surrealism and body horror. Tomie's story is a modern classic of horror and perfectly shows Ito's range.

The story of Tomie is quite unique. Told over short stories, the tale of a girl who isn't quite human - a paranormal siren of sorts - multiplying and slowly taking over different parts of Japan and not fully intentionally. Starting small and ending large, each short story has its own tale to tell of all the characters.

Not too much character development overall due to the format, but that's not a negative. This is very much just about the surrealist body horror and the absolutely bizarre and fantastical story.
