Livingston
by J.M. Dabney
I didn’t give this book a star rating because I don’t know that I could be fair. I have so many issues with this story I’m not sure where to begin.
I haven’t read the authors’ other two series from which this is a spin-off. I only discovered this after reading a couple of reviews because I was terribly confused regarding all the characters (I never read reviews before starting a book). Without having read any of the other books, I was lost when it came to all the characters. The author assumed reading this book after reading the previous two series which was a bit frustrating since this is touted as a standalone. There was not enough explanation about the characters and it was confusing to try to keep up with them. There was way too much history with all these characters and this town to make sense to a first time reader. And forget about keeping up with the couple of characters that were mentioned only a couple of times. I still don't know who they are or what they mean to these people.
The writing was hard to get used to and I had to read passages several times to totally grasp what was happening. The story felt very rushed, especially the ending.
There was so much going on with all the characters and their apparent D/s relationships I’m guessing was learned in the previous books because none of the groundwork was laid for any of that in this book. There was too much the author assumed is known by the reader and for someone just diving into this world for the first time my head was spinning.
After two weeks of Livingston protecting Fielding, Livingston was already referring to Fielding as ‘his boy’. Fielding responded to Livingston with ‘sir’ from the beginning, which I first thought was due to Livingston being his older bodyguard but turns out was Fielding automatically being his submissive. I can make my own assumptions on Livingston’s need for control and dominance but we learn next to nothing about Fielding’s history and why he craves the submission.
Fielding went from being a virgin to being spanked, calling Livingston ‘daddy’, and having anal sex with Livingston. There was absolutely no discussion on whether Fielding was interested in being spanked, calling Livingston daddy or if he even wanted penetrative sex. I’m not sure how Fielding even knows about being in a D/s relationship since he claimed more than once to be sheltered, never allowed to be on his own and being completely inexperienced and naïve.
Fielding was almost forced to have oral sex with Livingston (Fielding’s first sexual experience btw) and Livingston was not gentle; and their size difference is significant. It was cruel instead of sensual or exciting.
The SECOND time they have penetrative sex Livingston fists Fielding. Did I mention their size difference is considerable?
This one is just me being nit picky – Livingston used the words y’all and ain’t – which living in Texas I’m used to. This was in California (which incidentally is where I was born and never heard those words until we moved to Texas). If it was mentioned Livingston was from the south I missed that. His vernacular didn’t work for me.
I have so many questions still after finishing the book. Who are ‘the Crews’? How did the Trenton security folks discover who the stalker was with no evidence left behind? How did the stalker know where to find Fielding? How were they possibly able to find the stalker with Fielding not realizing he was gone until two hours after Fielding was taken?
IF you’ve read all the other books leading up to this one, you may like this one. If you haven’t and really want to read this book, go back and read all the others leading up or you will be as lost as I was. I am done with this series and possibly this author.
