A Twist of Fate by Kelley Armstrong

3.0

I was very intrigued by the set-up for this book from A Stitch in Time, but unfortunately I found it a bit disappointing. I think the issue comes down to what I look for in romances, which isn't going to be true for everyone. I always gravitate towards slow burn, and part of that is getting to see a relationship really develop over time. There's really no relationship development here.
SpoilerRosalind and August are separated by forces beyond their control; when Rosalind goes back to the past, her feelings for August are unchanged, and he still loves her. When he doesn't know who Rosalind is, he's a bit cold towards her, and he does soften a bit before he knows the truth, but it's not like he develops serious feelings for her, and as soon as he finds out the truth, they're back together and everything's perfect. I mean, there's some small growth in that he was very jealous/protective of her when they were first married and has to move past that, but otherwise the book is much more about Rosalind finding her way back to August and how he'll react when he finds out and less about the actual development of their relationship, which is just not as interesting to me. And again, that's definitely a personal thing — I'm sure this will be much more appealing to other people, but it wasn't what I was looking for.
I did still find the plot and the characters pretty interesting (the relationship between Rosalind and her son was particularly good), but I was expecting more interest/investment in the romance than I had. And it's not that this was bad, which is why it's still getting 3 stars; it's just that my expectations were much higher. I still love Kelley Armstrong's writing in general, though, and I'm planning on reading the third book when it comes out and have hopes it will work better for me.
