Death of a Schoolgirl by Joanna Campbell Slan

4.0

4.5 stars! I had a hard time putting this one down! It may not be a “gothic” novel nor is it totally in the style of Charlotte Brontë, but the character in this book felt true to the original Jane Eyre. Her innate compassion, combined with curiosity, made her stick around to help solve the mystery she encountered.

I enjoyed the variety of characters presented in the girls’ school, and the author was able to use this variety of personalities to make comments on the gender and class inequalities of the time period in which Jane lived.

One or two things stuck in my mind as slightly “out of character” for Jane: I can’t imagine Brontë’s Jane climbing a tree (!?), nor can I see her quickly feeling so comfortable with keeping a knife in bed with her, even for one night!

I’m a eagerly looking forward to reading the second book in this set!
