Hat Trick by Coralee June, Carrie Gray
5.0
Uproariously funny, delightfully clever, trope defying, and deliciously sexy- Hat Trick is a heartfelt riot. This is everything I love about this hilarious writing duo!
By now you should know what to expect from a rom-com from this hysterical writing duo. Hat Trick has all the charms that make these two tops on my list of must-read rom com authors. It’s outlandishly funny and incredibly witty- a great marriage of situational humor, sharp one-liners, and amusing, quirky characters that somehow both entertain and beguile. And it is raunchy AF. This book is legit laugh out loud funny, spit out your drink and wipe tears from your eyes funny. But it also has a lot of heart. Beneath the sharp wit and the zany situations our sassy heroine and quirky hot jock find themselves in, Cora and Carrie deliver a really endearing, quite swoony love story- about finding love in the last place you expect it, embracing it’s imperfections, and how easily you can find yourself when you open your heart.
Like others I recommend going in blind- that is how this story is designed to be experienced. You aren’t supposed to know the romantic infrastructure- so just dive in head first and enjoy the wildly entertaining ride. Our amazing heroine Peyton is down-on-her-luck sports coordinator- on the rebound after her now-ex-boyfriend cheats on her in a quite humiliating (and forever immortalized) hat trick. While schmoozing for a new job, she ends up doing a bit of rebounding of her own- putting her in the path of hot hockey stars Noah, Hatch, and Joni. She has endearing and hilarious meet cutes with each- and immediate chemistry that she decides to explore, each with very different outcomes. But juggling three men is the least of her problems when she discovers her new job is with their team- and now she has to find out how to make her very non-professional bond with each guy fit into her new professional role. But the hook-up buddy, the clinger, and the trouble maker don’t make that easy.
The characters are just FANTASTIC. And while I don’t want to spoil, this is not a RH- but the path to getting to the HEA is very unique- and super steamy. Peyton is a heroine that you can’t help but root for and adore. She’s incredibly clever, sassy, and delightfully bold. She’s got a quirkiness and awkwardness that are so freaking endearing - and girl can’t help but speak her mind. But she’s also got a real vulnerability to her that captivates- beneath her bravado lies a wounded woman just trying to find herself and her place in the world. A woman trying to find respect in a profession dominated by men, and a woman trying to find authentic connection, a love that lets her be her truest self after a series of heartbreaks and missteps. Cora and Carrie do some REALLY brilliant things here when it comes to chemistry. Noah, Hatch, and Joni all have their own charms and charism, and their own flaws and downsides- each comedically ridiculous in their own ways. Peyton has a unique and meaningful connection with each of them- and C and C bring really intentional nuance to her relationships. Each helps Peyton heal parts of herself, but also discover parts of herself. She learns what she wants and needs- and surprisingly, it’s not at all what she’s been looking for, what she expects. But the men still have substance. And, while you love each of them, the way the story is constructed ensures you’re happy with how it ends up- while keeping all these characters perfectly themselves. Each has chemistry, but it evolves and refines in a strategic way, so whether your team “wins” or doesn’t, you’ll find the HEA deliciously perfect. (but my team won, just FYI)
But what I love most about this story is what I’ve come to expect from the brilliant mind of Coralee June and from the clever observations of Carrie Gray- and that is how this comedy breaks all the rules. Hat Trick subverts everything you expect about a rom-com or a romance in general. Sharing just how would ruin some of the fun- but you’ll know the moments when you read them. Somehow, these authors have captured the experience, the feelings, the swoony and sincere magic of a rom-com experience while also flipping the trope on its head. Each character, each moment is playing with the trope- finding a new way to tell a hilarious and flirty story. And that makes Hat Trick so much more than a feel goody, fun story- though it’s that too. Yet again- it’s about Cora and Carrie’s point of view- how they have the uncanny ability to show us the parts of love we sometimes don’t think of as “romantic,” that don’t play to trope- and showing us just how dreamy they are. And despite all the outlandish funnies, that means Hat Trick has a really relatable authenticity that warms the heart. It reminds us love doesn’t always start how you think, that it often comes where you least expect. How true romance is less about sweet nothings and flowers and more about the incredible feeling you have when you can just be yourself with someone so completely. How your worst experience is somehow better and more meaningful than your best with someone else. That’s fresh, that’s witty, and that’s real. And that’s what makes these two such a dream team.
Snatch Hat Trick up- it will not only leave you wheezing from laughter, but it will fill your heart with all the sweet and swoony butterflies.
