Sounds Like Love by Ashley Poston
4.5

THIS. one thing about me is for some reason i love books that have to do with music even though i am not a musical person whatsoever. something about the way music connects the two main characters just does it for me. ashley poston does it in such a beautiful way in this novel. paired with the magical realism element?! bound for success from me.

the only reason this is a 4.5★ instead of a 5★ for me is because i didn’t get the ✨feeling✨. the beginning was a little slow for me until the two characters were in the same place and the romantic tension started. other than that, the introduction to the characters in the beginning and what was going on in joni’s family was tugging on my heart strings! i’m not sure if it’s a spoiler (at least i didn’t know about it going in), but this book deals with a topic that could be triggering to some, so look up the warning list to be safe! ashley poston did a good job making the reader feel what joni was feeling in regards to her mother and big life changes. i found myself wanting to annotate quite a bit while reading, which is how i know i like an author’s writing.

my favorite part of this book was the magical realism element! them being in each other’s thoughts added a level of intimacy and romance that i have never really read before in a romance. in romantasy books such as acotar or fourth wing, i didn’t get the same feelings of giddiness when those characters were communicating in their minds. the little asides that sebastian (sasha? i still don’t know what to call him tbh) had in his head after saying something out loud to joni were so sweet. idk!!! something about it really had me giggling hehe.

the third act conflict was pointless. pointless enough that it bothered me enough to even say anything about it here. it didn’t even last that long, so like just leave it out maybe??? other than that, i really liked how this book ended. it was a mixture of sad, happy, and hopeful. crazy that the two main characters never even said “i love you” to each other!!! another reason i love books with music. the music speaks for them, man. it sounds like love!!! 🎶💕

i recommend this, i think it’s my second favorite ashley poston book so far! i just really enjoy the fun magical realism elements that she writes into her romances to make them a little bit different than the run of the mill contemporary romance novel.
