The Game by Danny Dagan

challenging dark emotional tense fast-paced

5.0

I love the cover of this book, the beautiful shade of blue somehow feels peaceful, and yet the overall picture somehow conveys the thrilling story within.

I was absolutely blown away when I realised that this was a debut novel, and am desperately hoping that it will become a series. For me it was both a sinister twist on the well known story of Robin Hood, and also an interesting narrative on wealth and what that really means. On paper, someone may have billions of pounds. Yet the selling of assets and companies to release that money leads to job losses further down the chain.

This story was perfectly paced and had me fully invested right from page one. I felt like I should have disliked the main characters, or at least their parents. And whilst I'd never agree with the methods that Robin Brigade used, the fact that a handful of people could solve poverty by sharing their wealth makes me uncomfortable.

The writing style had me fully immersed in the story. And the twists at the end, well I did not see them coming! The language used and level of description was absolutely spot on. The characters were all interesting both individually, and as a group.

This was an outstanding read, even more so for being Danny's debut work. He is definitely going to be an author to look out for!
