Wyrd Sisters by Terry Pratchett
4.0
Ah Mr. Patchett, how I wish you hadn't left us, the world surely seems a little less bright now that you're no longer in it.
The poet Kathleen Norris was once quoted as saying:
"Just the knowledge that a good book is awaiting one at the end of a long day makes that day happier. "
This is definitely that kind of book. It's not a pageturner, but I would steadily read it for a bit and it was perfect at chasing the gloom of the day away. I found myself looking forward to that little moment of reading each day and it was a great way of closing off the day in bed, right before drifting off. (I'm single, all right?!)
The characters are awesome. The titular three witches steal the show and damn are they fun to read about, especially when they're together. Their conflicting personalities yet reluctant loyalty and affection towards each other makes for some hilarious scenes. The wit, as you would expect from a Discworld novel, is top notch. So many times I found myself grinning and even laughing out loud. The many Shakespeare references were fun to pick up on as well, and were often guilty snickering pleasure. This is such a feel good, laugh, get away from life for a bit book and I enjoyed every second of it.
The only thing you have with these kinds of novels is that the plot can be a bit slow sometimes. Discworld is more about the dialogue and characters than it really is about the plot. Not that the plot is bad, not at all, it just isn't the most spectacular one ever written. Again that is not the aim of these kinds of novels, but it is why I problably never give it the full five stars. It does leave one a bit wanting in the end. Still it is the only critisism I can think of. Reading the entire Discworld series remains one of my bookish life goals. First thing I did after reading this Discworld novel? Bought another one. That should tell you enough really.
