Exhalation
by Ted Chiang
These stories are as good as his first collection, but are missing some humanity, or heart, maybe. Like the television series Black Mirror, these stories investigate humanity’s creations and how they impact our lives, but I wanted to care about the characters and I never made it there in these stories. My favorite two were Exhalation and The Lifecycle of Software Objects. The second of the two, which was about AI programming similar to a more advanced Tamagotchi pets had the closest to an emotional connection, but couldn’t wrap my mind around how the software worked and why these abandoned “pets” mattered so much to the protagonist. Again, the subjects of each story were fascinating, I just wanted emotion.
