I started reading this book and it came off lightweight and not that funny. But I stuck with it and I'm glad i did, it turned out to be such a sweet story. Not saccharine or schmaltzy but dark and light and loving and wildly imaginative.
It's easy to draw parallels to the cloud atlas, but this feels like less a 'grand idea' imposed on a story, and instead a joyful, interesting story about love and loss and failure.
Don't let the breezy writing fool you, this book has real depths.
