Rules of Attraction by Simone Elkeles
4.0

Finally back in the world of the Fuentes brothers. Elkeles has created predictable plots that still keep us interested, and that's a credit to her storytelling. Here Carlos and Kiara tell their story through alternating first-person narration. It's hate-at-first-sight for both of them. Carlos MUST prove his 'bad boy' reputation as he simmers with anger about being forced to leave his mom and little brother in Mexico, and live with his older brother Alex in Colorado. Gangs, drugs, booze...they seem to be the Fuentes legacy, and Carlos is out to prove he's worthy.

Kiara seems to be a sweet, middle-class girl with no problems, but we see thru her narration, a deep insecurity because of her stuttering, and the mean girls who love to laugh at her. She needs to know who she is before she can figure out what kind of boy will make her happy.

Their approach-avoidance dance is fun to watch, and an added bonus is seeing Brittany and Alex again. Things are not going smoothly as they try to build a solid relationship and face the future together.

both Carlos and Kiara have a lot to learn, and they do. They learn that another person doesn't fill the holes in our own lives -- they complement us and give us room to grow.
