Untold by Sarah Rees Brennan

Ugh, I've lost the ability/time/inclination to sit down and write detailed reviews these days.

Unspoken snapped me in half emotionally, but I think I liked the sequel less. Yet SRB is so good at atmosphere, ambience, at planting you right in her characters' heads and wallowing in their emotions -- I practically experience secondhand butterflies in my stomach whenever I read the romance in these books, and I do really love her characters. You're right there feeling everything with them, and it's all feels feels feels. The great thing about Untold is that we finally get to delve more into minor characters who didn't get a chance to shine in the previous book, like Ash, Lillian, Rusty, more Holly, Kami's dad, etc.

The pacing felt more off in this one, however. It's a lot of preparation and scurrying about waiting for solstice, while... not actually accomplishing very much or progressing the plot as much as I'd have liked. And the sorcerer 'war' just felt off in general, considering they were pitted against villains who were literally trying to kill them but the villains just sort of lurked in open sight and did nothing for what felt like months?

And my main problem is that almost all of the obstacles standing in the way of the personal/romantic plot were so contrived. Oh my god. So many frustrating misunderstandings and people just being really stupid and creating problems for themselves that could've been solved so quickly! I'm all for romantic obstacles but it felt somewhat forced here.

THAT SAID. I'm still totally on board for this ride, and am stoked to see where the series goes as a whole. I just love the cast so much.
