ssaekaye 's review for:
Beauty Sleep: A Retelling of Sleeping Beauty
by Cameron Dokey
it pains me to give this a bad review, because i like cameron dokey, but i just did not like this book.
1. incest. youre all cousins, like, i know that was common amung royals but still.
2. you did not love oswald.
3.how can ironheart wake you up if neither of you love each other.
4. you and ironheart fight all the time.
5. you fight everyone all the time.
6. not fazed your parents are dead, huh? i know logically youd been gone for 100 years but to you it only seemed like a week so youd think she felt guilty at least? nope.
7. as soon as you are to be married to oswald (who your parents think as THEIR SON) suddenly you have a flirty banter? like the character dynamics changed.
8. no one had a real personality. there was no depth. aurore's personality was only one thing: disagreeable. ironheart was supposed to be nerdy i guess? oswald was written as a scheming traitor but i guess that counts for nothing because she suddenly loves him.
9. i wish jane had come back into the story.. or the godmother.
I do need to point out however that I really did love the scenes with the king and queen. They were very sharp and intelligent so I appreciated that.
it was cool about the two timelines intersecting. but that was about the only thing i thought was clever. i read these retellings because usually i cant predict them and theyre clever and this one was just very predictable and shallow to me. as if it took a week to write. i dont know, it really just wasnt for me :/
