Our Dear Dead Drug Lord by Alexis Scheer

4.0

If I could explain this play with one line, it’s “the exorcism of the patriarchy”. Scheer ties in elements of magical realism in this thrilling coming of age play that is seen with these four girls on the brink of adulthood in 2008. There’s something so intriguing about the use of ritual (both in magic and life) that leaves you thinking about the following question: what does it mean to grow up? There was a lot that happens in the last few scenes that felt like a lot but it doesn’t change that I think it’s still such a good read (also obsessed with it being set in Miami as someone who grew up there).
