The Only One Left by Riley Sager

mysterious sad slow-paced
  • Plot- or character-driven? A mix
  • Strong character development? It's complicated
  • Loveable characters? No
  • Diverse cast of characters? No
  • Flaws of characters a main focus? It's complicated

2.5

This was one of the first books I've read in the mystery genre and I can't say I was impressed.  The book itself felt like a campfire story made into a full narrative that just didn't have enough substance.  The ending felt tied up in a weird, unnatural bow that I didn't find satisfying.  The side characters felt extremely sidelined and needed development. The writing itself was good, but by the end I found myself no longer intrigued by the mystery of Lenora Hope.
