When I picked this book up from the library, I was caught off guard by its thickness relative to other books I've been reading all summer. I was a little unsure that I was ready for something dense after several 'breezy' reads. However, that was quickly forgotten as I got started into reading the book. Liz Moore jumps back and forth in time over a span of about 15 years, and is very clear at the start of each chapter what time frame you're in and which character you're viewing the world through. I found the characters diverse enough to add just enough complexity to make the mystery intriguing but not confusing. I did find some of the youth characters seemed older in their behaviour than their described age would typically elicit, but in the context of the book and era, it's easy to just go with it. Even towards the end I was still debating the who-dunnit aspect, and the ending felt satisfying all around. Reminds me a little of Kate Morton's books in terms of substance, nuance, and complexity (but less romantic elements). Definitely interested in reading another of Liz Moore's novels.
