The Exiles by Christina Baker Kline

This historical fiction piece about English convicts transported to Tasmania to increase the population of the workforce and contribute to its colonization is thought provoking throughout.

I adore vivid characters and Christina Baker Kline writes them so well. The women whose perspectives guide us through the experiences within the book evoke empathy and compassion for the harsh treatment of these unfortunate people.

Significant themes of feminism in the 1840s, redemption, how incarceration disproportionately affects the poor, colonization and the damage it causes to indigenous people make up the engaging story and experiences of these characters.

This book is informative yet easy to comprehend. I really enjoyed this speedy read and I think it is another worthy title to add to your reading list!
