The Haunted Vagina
by Carlton Mellick III
One of my friends at work gave me this book to read - not because he particularly enjoyed it, but to add to a long chain of friends and strangers passing around a copy of this weird, effed up little book. The point was to be bizzaro fiction, and I get that, but my goodness I *HATED* it. I could tell almost instantly the book was written by a white person, most likely a dude - because of the way the book and the narrator talked about Stacy, and later where she was from. Despite knowing she was from Thailand, there’s a whole passage where he references her background as just being “Asian”, which really tells you all you need to know about the way this author sees race. Tbh, the whole book exuded “my wife is Asian” energy, in that it felt fetishistic - not just in the explicit bizzaro way, but also because of the simple fact of Stacy’s race and the ways it and she were referenced. Obviously bizzaro fiction is not for everyone, but I really really hated this book. Literally not a single redeeming quality!
