This wasn’t earth shattering but I feel like it’s done its job as a first book in a trilogy. I feel I have a decent grip on the world and magic system but I don’t feel like it was contrived or dumped on me all at once. I did see the plot twist coming though but that’s not the end of the world. I wish we had a little more of Alina and Mal as younger kids so we could feel more connected to them as a pair though. Lastly, the final events of this book felt too convenient. If Alina is going to get to control the stag’s powers because she spared its life, that should happen right away, not days later because a dream said so.
