From Non-Reader to Book Lover: My Journey with Blood Over Bright Haven
Growing up, I was never much of a reader. Reading always felt like homework, and I honestly can’t remember ever finishing a fiction book before now.
My wife has always loved reading, and I’ve always loved the idea of reading. So, I decided to challenge myself to finish a book and see how I felt. Being a massive fan of fantasy films and an avid Dungeons & Dragons player (also thanks to my beautiful wife), fantasy felt like a natural place to start.
After some research about popular stand alone fantasy I picked up Blood Over Bright Haven at the bookstore without knowing mush about it. The story is a standalone fantasy novel set in a gritty, magical city where danger and wonder collide as the characters navigate political intrigue and ancient magic. From the very first chapter, I was hooked. I read the first 100 pages in one night, and over the next week, I managed to finish the entire book. I’d always thought reading a book in a week was impossible for me. Yet here I was, having done just that.
After finishing, I realized I’d been on an emotional journey that no film had quite been able to replicate before. The characters are wonderfully flawed, and the themes are dark and emotional—I loved every moment of it. At points, I had no idea what was going to happen next, and every chapter ended with me eager to read more.
The magical system in this book is wild and complex, and the exploration of it was masterfully done. M.L. Wang has crafted a world full of depth while keeping the story firmly driven by its characters.
The writing style was fast-paced and immersive, making it easy to get lost in the story. The journey of the main characters added layers of emotion that will stay with me long after I turned the last page. The book’s dark atmosphere was intense but never overwhelming, perfectly balancing moments of hope and despair.
I can’t wait to continue my reading journey and will definitely be picking up a copy of Sword of Kaigen. I’d highly recommend Blood Over Bright Haven to anyone who enjoys dark fantasy with rich characters and an inventive magic system.
