Take What You Can Carry by Gian Sardar
3.0

I pre-ordered this and really wanted to love it but sadly I didn’t. The book started well but then seemed to get bogged down in so much detail and description that I lost the will to read it. I actually left it for over a week and then started all over again in the hope of getting further. I was determined and this time I finished!

The second half of the book is much stronger than the first half and maybe the earlier parts just needed more editing? It really is a shame because the excess words seemed to hinder my involvement with the plot and the characters at times, both of which are interesting.

I would have liked some of the characters to fill me in with more of the political background to the situation. The Peshmerga are mentioned as is Mustafa Barzani but little else that puts the occupation of Kurdistan in context.

However, Kurdistan is a fascinating country that we hear little about. It’s interesting to hear about the Iraqi occupation and the suffering of the Kurds in 1979.

The fact that Olivia wants to be a good photographer raises all sorts of difficult questions for her about the morality of taking photos when people are suffering. She finds some kind of resolution by the end of the book which made sense to me.
