This book was not quite what I expected, but I still enjoyed it very much.  I selected this book as an Amazon First Reads, because it is an urban fantasy by a Vietnamese American.  I’m a big fan of Aliette de Boddard, a science-fiction and fantasy author who leverages her Vietnamese background.

Van Hoang writes about a second generation Vietnamese American, but the fantastic seems to come from western culture.

The story, however, is very good.  The setting in 1959 L.A. allowed for some great banter.  The characters drew me into the story.  The magic seemed plausible and drove the plot.

I would read a sequel to see what happens next to these characters.
