In a Dark, Dark Wood by Ruth Ware
5.0
This blew me away. It's a classic mystery in every sense of the word - It's excellent, it's well plotted, it has great characters, it has a gripping central mystery, and it doesn't bugger it all up trying to "subvert expectations" or any of that poison that's crept into so much entertainment lately. It is an Old Dark House mystery and has zero pretensions otherwise, and I loved it.
Main character is invited to the hen party of a school friend she's been estranged from for a decade. There are other women there that she only vaguely knows, and the whole thing takes place in an isolated mansion that's snowed in.
That's really all I want to say about the plot other than to add that it flits freely from mystery to drama to horror and back, and has a very enjoyable creep factor for what looks at the outset like a standard cozy mystery.
I enjoyed it so much I've gone out and gotten several more of the author's books, and that's about the best recommendation I can give it.
