RATINGS
Overall: 3.6/5
Characters: 3/5
Plot: 3/5
Chemistry: 3/5
Spice: 4.5/5
Pacing: 4/5
World/Setting: 2.5/5

MAIN CHARACTERS - Ember/Queen, Diamond, Spade, Club, & Heart

SYNOPSIS - Having always felt a draw to Cirque Obscurum, a young woman on death's door seeks their help to escape her abusive husband. The 4 suits of the circus allow her to finally embrace her darkness and find her freedom.

REVIEW - I always struggle rating books like this because I know not to set the bar high for depth because that's not what they are intended for. That being said, I just have to be honest and say this one was ok and I liked it but it didn't really stand out for me among others in the same type of setting and darkness. Each MMC got some love and minor backstory but their relationship with Ember was mostly carnal or just bloodlust/insanity. Sometimes that works and sometimes it leaves something to be desired. I think Heart was the most interesting character and yet we never got to delve into that madhouse. I would've loved to see more involved with the dark circus as well as maybe a stronger plotline.
SpoilerHer abusive husband coming back after she spared him was obvious but he just has all this power from his wealth and notoriety as a doctor? Please, dude.
Last, I was really confused as to where/when this takes place. The language used was modern but a lot of the ideas the FMC mentions seem dated. They keep referencing a war and how women weren't expected to go to college and instead be housewives but the vehicles and settings seemed current. Maybe an alt verse? Does it matter in the grand scheme of things? Probably not. But it kind of annoyed me not being able to figure it out. Maybe I'm just weird.

WOULD I RECOMMEND - Eh.. It's dark and dirty and reads pretty quick. Just go in knowing to expect a fun but surface level "romance".
