The Scorpio Races by Maggie Stiefvater
4.0

Every November it is almost guaranteed that someone will die preparing for or participating in the Scorpio Races. For these races are not standard horse races, they instead involve deadly water horses. Sean Kendrick knows all about the risks, having lost his father to the races as a child; he is also the current reigning champion. Puck Connelly knows almost nothing about the races when she signs up. They are both looking for something that they just might find in each other.

While I couldn't get into Stiefvater's previous books I really enjoyed this one. The world building, character developments, and writing are excellent. A couple of minor plot points are left undeveloped, but otherwise the story wraps up neatly.
